I'm copying this to the list because I'm hoping some people more
knowledgeable than I can offer suggestions - as you can see from Judie's
reply there is hope for my search. I am SO thankful for Judie and all those
who helped with this project and to the person who posted it to the list!

To get to the question: Since Judie says these records come from mortuary
records - how would I find the original records? Do the FHC have access to
the original mortuary records? And is the 1870 Census available somewhere
for San Francisco?

My g-g-grandmother, Margaret Hart, was the one located on the pre-1905 CADI
and this is the only record I can find anywhere of her existance. Even in
Yorkshire, where my g-g-grandfather was from there is no record of her birth
or marriage - after her death, my g-g-grandfather and great grandfather
ended up in Hawaii. But this is a hole in the family history - did they set
out for Hawaii and she died enroute? Did they settle in San Francisco and
then decide to leave after her death?

Anyone with suggestions please let me know -

Regards and MUCH thanks

Well now...I answered too soon...did not notice this post...
No, CADI is for information only...gotten in this case from Mortuary
records. There were no laws requiring death records until 1906. So,
sometimes we were lucky and sometimes not in finding records. These
records were filmed by the Mormons, and on the outside chance that there
was more information than was transcribed, you can go to your local FHC
(Family History Center), and order the record containing this
information. When it comes (on film) from SLC, the center will call you,
and then you go back over there and view it with one of their
"readers"...if you find her, you can copy that entry with the copier
built into the machine.
Also, there are city directories of San Francisco, going way back, and
some of them are on line http://www.sfgenealogy.com/sf/index.html may
help....
http://feefhs.org/fdb2/sfcalli.html This site is of SF
newspapers...going way back....

http://www.sfgenealogy.com/sfdata.htm#er This site will take you to
various other data bases, including passenger lists and immigration
records...

This should give you some interesting reading material!!!

Happy hunting~~~~

Hello-

I just found my mysterious g-grandmother on the list (October 1871) Is
there
any way I can find out more? What did she die of and how long had she
been
in San Francisco? Can I order a death certificate from this information
on
the CADI?

This is a huge "hole" in my family history. Her husband and son ended up
in
Hawaii by 1890 and I'd love to know if this was a stop off for them or
if
they lived there awhile and they moved on after her death? Any
suggestions
you could give would be greatly appreciated!
