Search?
Hi NORCAL Listers,
Agnews State Hospital also provided inclusive housing for people
with significant developmental disabilities---cerebral palsy,
epilepsy, autism, genetic disorders and mental retardation.
At one time parents were counseled to place a child in such an
institution; minimal resources were available at the community level.
Many of the patients spent their entire lives in the care of the
Agnews staff. With changes in philosophy regarding the disabled,
community based services and enabling legislation---the ADA and
Lanterman Act---in CA, Agnews and other Developmental Centers are
being phased out. The individuals with developmental disabilities are
being placed in various levels of community care, educational and
employment settings.
Perhaps some of the Listers seeking information about their relatives
may want to widen the focus of the inquiries and include the person
who may have been disabled.
