>Dear Kent, Pretty well any encyclopaedia has entries on the Townshends, one
of the famous families of England. The 2nd Viscount Charles Townshend,
famous as "Turnip" Townshend of Raynham Hall, Norfolk, and all his lot,
before and since, are written up in my 1911 Britannica, volume 27, p112.
Your ancestor seems to have predated the famous 1st viscount, but his naming
of his home place in North Carolina "Raynham" surely indicates a family
connection with the famous haunted stately home of the Townshends at Raynham
in Norfolk. I should think you will be inundated with information in reply
to your query, all of it much better informed than mine. Best wishes, Robert
Tuck
