Subject: Phillimore - good news and bad news! (long but worth it)
Date: Thu, 3 Sep 1998 09:32:15 +1000
Dear All,
This may be a bit of a long detailed post but I have a few things to
mention. Anyone who really wants to get just the gist of the matter without
reading through my scintillating repartee :-) please scroll to the
conclusion at the bottom!
First the bad news (then the good news will seem even better :-)).
Yesterday afternoon I decided to flick back through my archive of Norfolk
mail and write down all the surnames that various people have posted to the
list. (I know - I should have just printed out Isabel's Norfolk Surnames
List - but as I have admitted to several fellow listers, my brain has not
been operating on quite full power for the last few weeks and I didn't think
of it :-)). So, optimist that I am I began the task..............and ended
up with a list of 291 surnames. Undaunted, I set off to the library - list
in hand - to begin scouring one of the Phillimore registers. Unfortunately,
with so many surnames, I only got through one and a half parishes! Although
I must admit that certain surnames tend to stick in the mind a lot easier
than others - if you have an unusual surname, my brain is a haven :-).
Now I find myself with rather an 'information overload' so replies to
surname searches will take somewhat longer. I promise not to let my
enthusiasm wane. (That shouldn't be too hard since if I don't look busy
with my 'tree research', my other half will get me to help him with his
calculus homework and I know what I'd rather be doing :-))
Ta-da - time for some good news! In addition to the parishes already on
offer for lookups (Fakenham, Toftrees, North Barsham, East Barsham, West
Barsham, Snoring Parva, Snoring Magna, Thursford, Tatterford, Tattersett,
Sculthorpe and Holkham for those who have just joined us :-)) please add the
following parishes
East Rudham
West Rudham
Hellhoughton
Syderstone
South Creake
Waterden
Shereford
Dunton-cum-Doughton
Horningtoft
Whissonsett
Little Massingham
Phew! That'll probably be all the parishes that I'll be foolish enough to
add to the list! Last nights effort comes from the parishes Barton Turf
1558 - 1836 and Hedenham 1559-1736 (only got half way through). Have to
type up those notes too!
So, the conclusion from all this is that everyone I have sent data to over
the past few weeks will probably receive an update email in the next few
weeks. New surname files will be created and sent out. At some stage I'll
post all the surname files that I have over a series of 'alphabetically
separated' mails to the list (just like Isabel has done with the real
Norfolk surname list). So all of you out there please bear with me while I
try to sort out all the new data, type it in and not lose my job at the same
time :-). Remember, the registers contain marriages prior to 1837 only and
no births, deaths or burials. And I will do lookups for *explicit* requests
ie. definite parish, year and surname from any of the parishes listed in the
volumes! Otherwise it's a hit and miss swathe through the parishes listed
above!
Thanks for listening to all that. Hope I can help a few of you out there.

P.S. Thanks to all those who responded to my Haverland/Haveringland
location request! Very helpful indeed.
