Subject: Advice please - Military/Prison records & Census/Certificate mistakes
Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 12:04:44 EST

Hi - I have two questions which I'd like some help on:
1. I have a William Minns born circa 1860 in Norwich who through family
memories may have been both in the military and a prison warder. This could
explain his abscence from the 1881 census. Hows the best way to start
searching for military records in the late 1800's or prison warder records?
2. I have a William Wales who looks from the from the 1851 cenus to be the son
of William Wales in Norwich, but his marriage certificate says father was John
Wales (from the census he had a brother John Wales). In 1851 would a nephew
sometimes be listed as a son? Or could there be a mistake on the marriage
license and the witness John Wales be listed as father or a simple mistake of
puuting John twice? Any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks for any help

Mark
