The LAWS FAMILY REGISTER is a One Name Study we have a database of some
35,000 records LAW LAWE LAWES LAWS LAWSE Worldwide
My Name is John Patrick Laws .
I am the Registrar of the LAWS FAMILY REGISTER a One-Name study based in
Lincoln in the UK, I am a family historian of 27 years and have been
running the LFR for the last 15 years
My Grt Grandfather Robert Henry LAWS 1828-1891 & his father Henry LAWS
1800-1883 both Master Mariners sailing barques to St.Kitts & Nevis to
London, Henry also had voyages to Mauritius
Robert Henry's ship the "Woolhampton" was sold to Norway renamed "Adonis" &
wrecked at Tybee beach Near Savannah Georgia in the Americas Robert Henry's
brother Joseph was his 1st mate did he go down with the ship. He had been a
Master Mariner as his brother but is reputed to have killed a crewman at
sea, what truth there is in this we may never know
Henry's parents were John & Mary LAWS they had lived in Walworth Surrey
where they came from we don't yet know though there were Laws as yet
unrelated living in Walworth that came from Norfolk
My other interest is to hear of LAWES in Jamaica
where Nicholas LAWES was born 1652 he claimed his ancestry from Henry
LAWES the composer who lived in Salisbury & London he spent the civil war
teaching young ladies to dance & sing, seems he had the right idea,
he became Chief Justice 1698 & Governor 1718-23 his father Nicholas of
Compton Chamberlayne in Wiltshire England & died in Jaimaica abt 1664, his
mother Amy who died 1689 remarried 1664 to Col Gregory TOM and when he died
in 1665 she married Henry ARCHIBALD of Constant Spring, Jamaica
This husband had some rather renowned relations his first wife being
Johannes Wilheimina MORGAN daughter of Colonel Edward MORGAN Lt.Governor of
Jamaica 1664-65 he mother being Anna Petronilla daughter of John Ernst
Baron von POLLINTZ. Johannes Wilheimina had two sister that I know of the
first being Anna Petronilla who married Robert BYNDLOSS Commandant of Fort
Charles
the other being Mary Elizabeth who married her cousin Sir Henry MORGAN (The
Buccaneer) Going back to Nicholas LAWES the son he married 5 times each
time to a widow (That sounds suspicious)
(1). 1680 to Elizabeth widow of John POTTER she died 1685. they had a
daughter Amy who married Colonel Charles LONG of Longville Jamaica.
(2). 1685 to Frances widow of Ceaser CARTER and daughter of Paul GODWYN
Grd-daughter of Francis Bishop of Hereford she died in childbirth 1693
being bured with the sain unamed child at St.Andrew Jamaica 7 Mar 1693.
(3). Elizabeth widow of Colonel Samuel BARRY & Daughter of Sir Thomas
MODYFORD she was buried at Spanish Town Cathedral 1694
(4). Susanah widow of Samuel BERNARD Speaker of the Council & daughter
of Thomas TEMPLE of Frampton they had three children 1
(1) Sir James LAWES 1693-1733 he married 1720 to Elizabeth GIBBONS
who later married William 8th Earl HOME Governor of Gibraltar
(2) Temple LAWES 1699-1754
(3) Anne LAWES died 1711.
(5) Elizabeth 1690-1725 widow of Thomas COTTON & Daughter of Sir
Thomas LAWLEY of Spoonhill Warwickshire England Chatalaine of the Kings
Horse they had but one daughter Judith Maria LAWES of Iselworth in
Middlesex in England she married January 1756 to Simon LUTTRELL 1st Earl
Carhampton an Irish peer she died Dec 1798 at Sheepy Hall WILTS having been
blind some years their daughter Anne 1743-1808 married Christopher HORTON
of Catton Derbyshire after his death in 1805 she married Prince Henry
Frederick brother to King GEORGE III.
There was or may still be a substantial family troughout the islands
including I believe Barbados
In Gentleman's Magazine it was reported that Captain Joseph LAWS in 1734 of
HMS Mermaid, offended to Duke of Portland off Jamaica, that sounds like my
family, a man after my own heart I think that was Hugh Bentick Governor of
Jamaica
I have another Captain LAWS who relieved the siege of Cuba by escorted 100
transports safely to port without loss
If you have a particular interest in this surname why not join our group
but in the 1st case drop me a mail, we'ld love to hear from you
