In addition to different country keyboard settings, there is also
the difference between Mac & PC coding. An accented "e" on one machine
will not appear the same way on the other. In short, the codes for
special symbols are not standardised. (Example: this is the pound symbol
on the Macintosh: £ but it will look like an accented 'u' on the
PC. The PC pound symbol is this: ú [alt-156] but it will look like
an accented u on the Mac.)
One method is to avoid them completely, e.g. "...the cost was [pounds
sterling] 5.00...". One other way is to use HTML coding, which will work
on all platforms (at least, on MSIE & Netscape), e.g. "<HTML> ...the
cost was £5.00... </HTML>". Assuming your email allows for receipt
of HTML coded messages.
A last option is attached PDF files (Adobe Acrobat). Once created on
your own platform (computer), what you see is what the other party will
also see. (Never mind the *** codes -- just make it look like what you want.)
Sorry for the off-topic comment. Couldn't help myself.
TTFN.
