There are two adjoining parishes, Great and Little Witchingham, but as both
of the ancient village centres are now very sparsely populated, they are not
marked on some larger scale maps. Lenwade, which is actually a hamlet of
Great Witchingham but is now the main population centre, is on the A1067
road north west of Norwich between Morton-on-the-Hill and Sparham, and is
marked on most Norfolk road maps.
The prish of Great Witchingham is bordered by Booton, Little Witchingham,
Alderford, Weston Longville, Lyng, Sparham and Whitwell. Little Witchingham
is bordered by Booton, Brandiston, Swannington, Alderford and Great
Witchingham.
All these villages are within easy walking distance of each other, and
families can often be found moving between them. Great Witchingham is
mentioned many times in the journal of Parson Woodforde of Weston Longville.
Parish registers survive from 1539 for Gt Witchingham and 1584 for Lt
Witchingham, and the older registers are at the Norfolk Record Office.
As well as the two parish churches, there was a Wesleyan Methodist Chapel at
Lenwade, erected 1828, a Wesleyan Reformers meeting in a rented room at the
Kings Head in Great Witchingham, a Primitive Methodist Chapel in Great
Witchingham, all recorded in 1851. Of Little Witchingham church at the same
date, it is recorded:
'The parish of Little Witchingham contains a separate small church in which
there are 5 pews, or inclosed seats appropriated to the Farm houses and 6
open or free seats, accommodating from 24 to 30 persons, the general
Congregation does not average above 12 or 15 persons, except in the summer
months'
