Hello Joan
The Hermit's explanation of land required to keep a family is excellent.
But to be a bit pernickety (how do you spell that ?) it might help to
translate the measurements into (only just) slightly more up-to-date
language, because I for one could never remember rods, poles and
perches from my schooldays.
The 4840 sq. yards of are of an acre is an area divisible by 22 so
that the length of an acre could also be 220 yards which is a furlong
(from a furrow long I understand). Thus the width is 22 yards which
is 66 ft and until early 20th C was a dimension in common use and
called a chain. It is also I believe the length of a cricket wicket.
Out of interest a furlong of 220 yards is an eighth of a mile which
might make it easier to visualise. Incidentally there are about 2.5
acres to a hectare.
