Just to add a little bit to Colin's reply. The numbers appearing in
parentheses after an occupation have been appended by Government
staff (Civil Servants) after the original returns had been submitted
to the Registrar General.
Various numbers were assigned to represent certain sectors of
the economy, e.g. agricultural, commercial, retail, manufacturing,
maritime, etc. This was done so that the statisticians would know
what sector a certain occupation belonged to.
Not all occupations have a number after them - this is usually because
it is patently obvious what sector they should be placed in.
However, with some occupations it is not entirely clear to what
sector they should be assigned. For example, should a "builder of
marine engines" be placed in the maritime, manufacturing or
commercial sector ?
The Civil Servants would therefore make their own judgement,
probably using "guidelines" , about how to categorise occupations.
These numbers are of no use or significance to the family historian.
Best regards,

means works 1 day in 7 - the ancestor this refers to is 80 years of age. Or
could mean does not work 1 day in 7.
