Hello Everyone,
As I am new to the list I would like to introduce myself and submit my first
query.
My name is Margaret Wise, a retired primary school teacher of thiry-eight
years, married with two daughters, two-step daughters, eleven grandchildren,
two great-grandchildren (step) and expecting a third and I'm only fifty six
years of age. My husband and I live about a mile out of the centre of
Hobart, Tasmania where the weather is still extremely cold considering it is
well into the Spring season.
My query is about the 'ELLIS' family from Diss. My great-great grandfather,
Henry Ellis, believed to be the son of Henry Ellis and Mary Coe, was born
about 1805 but no church record has yet been found for his birth. The IGI
record was submitted by an LDS member and therefore can't be verified.
However, Henry Jun., together with Benjamin Jackaman, stole some malt, oats
and sacks from a maltery in Palmer Street at Walsham Le Willows where
Benjamin Jackaman was employed. These two were caught, convicted in the
Suffolk Assizes at Bury and on 7 March, 1837 they were sentenced to be
transported to Van Diemen's Land for seven years each arriving at Hobart
Town on 18 January, 1838 per the Neptune.
On the Genuki Norfolk website (William White's History, Gazetteer, and
Directory of Norfolk 1845) I found, in a Directory of Diss the following
members of the ELLIS
family:
Simpson Ellis, farmer, owned his own land at Heywood.
Henry Ellis, farmer, at Heywood
Robert Ellis, farmer, owned his own land at Scole Road.
Henry Ellis' Convict Indent form on arrival in Tasmania stated that he was
married with three children and had a father and wife at his native place.
As he was born about 1805 it is probable that he married about 1825. I
can't find a marriage or children for him on the IGI so I have no idea of
his wife's name. However, I am confident that his father's name was Henry.
As there was no mention of his mother, it could be presumed that she had
died. Where do I look for the death of Mary ELLIS?
Could SKS please check the 1841 Census and see if any of the above can be
verified. Not "living on site", it is a bit difficult to even know where to
look, let alone obtain the information from such a great distance.
I would be really grateful for any information about this family at all.
Should anybody require information from "The Great South Land", I would
consider it a privilege to offer my assistance.
Cheers,
Margaret
