Hi again, Carol.
The reference to taking the shillin probably refers to the taking of the
King's shilling (ie. enlisting in the military).
The web site http://www.the-old-sea-dog.net/uk9.html has some interesting
info regarding the operation of Royal Navy press gangs and refers to the
shilling.
Also, on http://www.hamblevalley.com/HFcobbett.htm we are told that "Men
would join a regiment, take the Kings shilling, desert and then join
another regiment to earn another shilling, and so on. If found guilty the
fine could be anything from a fine to the firing squad!"
