if you don't find the children in the workhouse/orphanage it was still MUCH
more common in this period for children to be taken on by other family
members or neighbours - even newborn babies. i have come across many cases
in 1880s London of other nursing women taking on the babies of relatives and
friends who died as a result of childbirth.
