Thank your for your reply Vic. I slipped up badly not mentioning the
time period, saying Grandad's cousin is not good enough. Commander
Walter BIGNOLD died in 1900 at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth.
Would that indicate that the book you mention would not have a record of
him or was it printed annually? I am sending this to the list in the
event other people may like to know also.

Hi Lillian,
You do not mention the time period in which the Commander served, but
all officers in the R.N. appear in the "Navy List", which has been
published at least once a year since before 1800. These will show
promotions, seniority, ships, special qualifications, medals, etc. Also,
if he was an officer c 1840, he will appear in "O'Byrnes Naval
Biography", which may show where he was born, his father, & give full
details of his service. I see that you are in N.Z. ; perhaps a library
in Auckland or other larger city may hold some of the books ; if not
there are many researchers in the U.K. who could look him up.
