Hi John,
if he was in the army and in this country in 1881,you should
find him in IGI,I had the same problem,found him in the Barracks,this is the
beauty of the 1881 census,FREE and so much info,then when you find him,note
his age and place of birth,use Free BMD to find possible marriage,and look
ups in other census etc,the London Archives link for census,s is brilliant
for this,when you dont know a area,

you then than look at 1841 to 01 census,s,but limited information.
