Elizabeth's paralysis was most likely caused by a stroke and she just
"wore out" or even had another stroke. James' general debility would be old
age creeping up on him, probably not looking after himself properly and his
immune system not working. Influenza could cause the diarrhoea and that
would finish him in his weakened state.
