To Norman rooters,
Butch Johnson is right about the formation of counties from Surry
County, NC after 1771. However, when Wilkes County was formed the line was
more eastward than it is today. Part of the original Wilkes County was
returned to Surry around 1800. That is why the same people appear in Wilkes
County one census and Surry County the next. They did not move, the line
did. The Mitchell's River valley where most of the Surry County Normans
settled in the early 1770s is in the western part of the county and was
originally in Surry in 1771, became part of Wilkes in 1778 and was returned
to Surry 20 or so years later. Hope this helps. I do not think Corbit
mentions this in his Formation of NC Counties. Dan
