Dear Shirley:
Regarding your Normans.....One of our Northeastern Norman clan married a Virginia Norman who moved to North Carolina where his progeny lived after the Revolutionary War. They lived in Yadkin County (Panther Creek.) The gentlemans name was Charles Wesley Norman b. 1756. I thought, for sure, that one of the Southern Norman clans would recognize him...but though I've sent out requests he doesn't seem to belong to any known Southern group. I don't know if he's of interest to you.
As far as France goes....my father told me our Northeastern Normans were originally from France then went into England. The progenitor of our group, Capt. John Norman sailed from Cornwall, England about 1750 with several brothers, settled first in Albany, then in Warwick, N.Y., and finally in Sparta, New Jersey . Just how long they were in Cornwall I have no idea. I was young when my father told me and not that interested in genealogy.....(don't we all live to regret that?) We could have been in England a short time or centuries......HOWEVER....and here is a bit of a mystery...Capt. John brought with him a French clock and a French ruler saying it was "from the old country."
Also, there are many Normans on the Isle of Jersey who settled there from France. They speak a dialect of French . Many of these Normans settled in the northern part of America. There's no reason they couldn't have moved South.
Good Luck!....Wish I could be more helpful!
Peace!
Kathryn E. Norman
