Recently there were some messages on this subject with the following included from "John" to "Shirley":

"Most people in the 1800 could read and write or be it very little ,if you
look at the census records you will find even the poorest familles sent
their young uns to school."

I would like to mention that often in the census records "Scholar" meant that the child was of school age and cannot be interpreted that he or she went to school!
