Simon,
I remember seeing a documentary some time ago about canal and rail tunnel
building in the 19th century. The men were referred to in that as excavators
so they may have been employed on a rail or canal project in that area.

Hi everyone.
In the 1881 census all 6 males of working age in the household of my wifes
Morby family who had recetly moved to Wellingborogh are described as
excavators. Were they likely to be quarrying ironstone or limestone? or was
it perhaps some large civil engineering project that attracted them to the
town? Any suggestions. Regards Simon.
