Hello,

I am writing to this list for the first time as I have just had news that my husband's grandmother, great & gr gr grandparents were born in England, Newcastle upon Tyne area to be specific. I have been to the south and made many friends of the helpful kind, so I am hoping for more to meet up here.

As to family knowledge otherwise great grandpa signed for daughter to mar in the US and stated that her birthplace was in Smokeland, England. I and others have spent years trying to find where such a town was located. Would this area of England be of a coal mining community and very smoky? This is the type of job that was had upon moving to Illinois in the USA in the late 1800's for the Allen family. I have found that many areas due to accents and people not being able to write when coming to the US were often misinterpreted. Sunderland is once such place that has been suggested in this instance.

Below is a short generation description of who we are looking for. If anyone has the ability to check records or feels that they know of others of this family, we would greatly appreciate assistance or suggestions as to how to proceed from here. I have been through the Rootsweb BDM listing for England / Wales and found no mar. dates for either of the sets of main parents. Several dates (which are one year off to what I have) match to children born to George and Mary Hill Allen to the north area. The only birth date that is reasonable to Mary Jane Allen dau. of John and Hannah Sim(m)s Allen is in the south. There is no listing for her older sister, Hannah. This leads me to think that perhaps this was a second mar. for Hannah Sims Allen...

Article on James' obit stated he was born in White Hall??? Eng. / Canada??? possibly. and came to US with parents at age of 6 yrs.

2. JOHN2 ALLEN, SR. (GEORGE1) was born October 1863 in England, and died December 23, 1939 in Carlinville, Macoupin County, Illinois. He married HANNAH SIM(M)S 1887 in England . Hannah born 12/1867, d. 1915 in Illinois. They came to US about 1900.
