My wife Anne got stuck on "beinveges" so she went to her fathers
dictionary.
"beinveg" - shortcut; "beinveges" - directly
So "he walked directly (took a shortcut)across a field when he was going
to work.
Anne this would not be unusual as the roads often went "the long way
round."
