I've got two different translations for the word sælabot: act of charity
and soul-fine/penance. Can anyone elaborate on the meaning of this word?
The context is below (an interesting little story in itself). The time is
somewhere between 1580 and 1680, and it is on the Humborstad farm in the
Nordfjord.

Etter segni skulde det vera gheve i sælabot for tvo systror på Kvie - bruket
(Kviebruket?),
som bleiv i tjønni; godset vart då lova kyrkja, ifall dei
fann att liki; um ei tid flotna liki upp av tjønni, og kyrkja fekk
godset.

Thank you.
