Subject: Painting of Norwegian sailing ship by Torwick/Torvick
Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 20:19:39 -0800
I am hoping someone on this list can help me clear up a little mystery.
I have an old oil painting of a 3-masted square-rigger flying the Norwegian flag, with a steamship in the background. The painting is signed by C. Torwick. According to my family history, there is a C. Torvick (probably first name Chris) who was my grandmother's cousin; he probably would have been born in Norway in the late 1800s. My uncle believes that the painting was painted by him, since my grandmother apparently owned the painting. He may have come to America on that ship, or may have worked on the ship, we don't know.
I have a couple of questions:
1 - I would like to trace Chris Torvick/Torwick and learn more about him and his branch of the family. I do have a copy of an old photo of him, but that's about all.
2 - I would like to identify the shipping line and, hopefully, the ship. The foremast is flying a white flag with a black ball in the center. All three masts are square-rigged and there are other identifying features, but no name given.
Any help would be appreciated. You can reply to me offlist at .
Mange tusen takk!
