There has been an incredibly tragic accident in the Barents Sea just to the east of the border between Russia and Norway, about 200 kms from the shore. A Russian submarine vessel named "Kursk" is stuck on the sea bed 108 meters down. On Saturday or Sunday there were strong explosions on board, maybe because of a collision. The sub lost its power supply and is unable to manouvre. 118 persons are trapped inside. Rescue operations have not succeeded in getting anyone out yet. The first days sounds could be heard from the inside, indicating that some of the crew were alive. They will probably run out of oxygen soon anyway. Our media are full of reports about this.
We are deeply concerned about this situation. The Russian people are our neighbours. Naturally, we are also worried about the long-time consequences for fish and other marine life if the sub starts leaking radiation as a result of the tragedy. For the time being there are no signs of radiation.
