Brian,
The most likely Norwegian placename would be GJERVIK (>Gjerwick, in US).
There are two farms with that name in Western Norway, that I know of :
(1) In ASKVOLL parish/municipality, Sogn og Fjordane fylke/"county".
(2) Next to KNARVIK which is the administrative centre in LINDÅS/Lindaas
parish/municipality (north of Bergen), Hordaland fylke/"county".
An other (less likely) possibility would be GJERDEVIK :
(3) in FUSA parish/municipality to the east of Bergen, in Hordaland.
(4) in ØLEN parish/municipality in southern part of Hordaland.
If you provide some name/s and approx dates I may be able to advise.
Viggo
in Bergen, Norway
