The pledge was written in the late 1800's.
It was encouraged by a newspaper editor in Rochester,NY.
He felt that our country had lost its patriotic fervor and he
printed the poem(written by an acquaintance) in his
newspaper. A tour throughout the U.S. introduced it
to school children.
