Svenum and Gunhild Hildahl
Svenum and Gunhild, sons johan , Kristian and Peder, left Kragro, Norway.
They came on the "Hastings and Dakota Railroad" to the "Wells Fargo" depot
in Myers, Minnesota (later Wegdahl) on July 3, 1882. Svenum some years later
bought 80 acres of "Railroad land" in sectin 27 of Sparta. Here they lived
in a "dugout" for several years. Svenum was from a long line of carpenters
which here, at the time there was a great demand for. So he went to work
right away. The three sons did the breaking of the sod, fencing, dug wells,
planted croops, groves and orchard to make this into a farm home.
A daughter, Anna, was born. Later Svenum started to build a frame house.
In 1905 Gunhild died. Svenum remarrried to Bertha Flugstad. Their family
was George, Bennie, Louie, Emma, Clara and Etta. In 1907 Svenum died. In
1910, John, wo had been doing carpenter work in the Pierpont, South Dakota
area for many years bought the "Home Place". In 1911 he married Hannah
Hammer from South Dakota. They had two sons, Eugene and Gordon. John died
June 11, 1953 and Hannah died June 3, 1963. Eugene did some farming, also
worked for the railroad. He was a blacksmith in Montevideo for 6 years and
30 some years as general contractor doing carpenter work, cement work and
house moving. He married Evelyn Prien. They built a home in Montevideo.
They have two daughters Nancy and Carol. Gordon served in World War II,
leaving the spring of 1941 and came home in the fall of 1945. He was on a
boat that was blown up going into Algiers, Africa. He was wounded and sent
to a hospital in England. He was involved in "The Invation of Normandy" and
later in "The Battle of the Bulge" As a result of his wounds he is
handicapped with bad legs. He was decorated and is on pension. He lives in
Granite Falls, Minnesota, and has six sons and 2 daughters.
