I wonder if anyone might be able to help explain a name change I have found for my ggg grandfather... All the information I have on him in the U.S. is for John Syverson, but according to the bygdebok, he is listed as Iver. He comes from a long line of Iver Syversons and Syver Iversons.

Here is what I have:

Iver SYVERSON, born July 23, 1818. He is listed in the Sor Aurdal bygdebok C, page 290 as Iver Syverson Raabodden.

The above was listed for me from the bygdebok, I don't have access to it (unfortunately). My understanding is that Ropodden is a subfarm under Odden in Sør-Aurdal, Oppland.

Iver/John immigrated to the US in 1857, so I miss him in the 1865 census. As far as I can tell, there isn't another database online at the digitalarkivet that shows him (though I found his father in 1801!)

Is there any way to figure out when (or why?) someone made a first name change? I know he married Thora Andersdatter Ingemoen on November 23, 1854, but don't know if records showed him as John or Iver.

Sigh... any thoughts would be much apprecaited!

:) Kalli
