Hello list,
I too have seen family trees on Ancestry that have wrong information and
totally undocumented. Even found a father who was born after the son -
things that anyone could see was wrong. No one has actually found a
father for this particular son (my ggg grandfather) as yet. But if
someone does, I will be the first in line to want documentation and then
include it in my tree.
But I have found some good information as well and found cousins too.
Usually when I find information that I feel certain is incorrect, I
contact that person via the link that ancestry provides and say
something like "I see that you have xxx for Jane Doe. I have Jane Doe
in my tree but have a different xxx for her. I have her birth
certificate (or whatever I have for documentation) but if you have other
documentation that proves your connection, please let me know what it is
so that I can change my tree if necessary. Or someone has parents for
one of my ancestors that I have been searching for for many years, I ask
for documentation so that I can include it in my tree -- happily if
true. Sometimes that person will respond that they found it on another
tree. Sometimes the tree owner will agree with me and change their
Ancestry tree.
I have also made "comments" - there is a comment box usually on the left
side of the screen - if I question or have true documentation that
disputes what is there. Sometimes it is as simple as being transcribed
incorrectly. I have had Ancestry respond to my comments, but don't know
if they ever change anything.
I have also found family members included in a tree that supposedly had
72,000 people and originated in Turkey. As I have no one from Turkey, I
think this person just takes others trees and includes them in theirs.
I do have cousins who have trees on Ancestry.
Just thought I would include my experiences with Ancestry. I do not
have a personal tree on Ancestry and really hesitate to do so. Anything
I find, I don't believe until I can prove it. Even though I want to
believe...
Regards,
Sandy
