Hello,
Boy, did that story bring back some memories. We also had a local
store. We lived in the "city" then, but the residential section. Our store
was Heck's Store and it was at the end of the streetcar line.
I too, remember being sent with a note for a pack of Luckies. No
problem. One of the things I remember most was standing in a long line on
Saturday morning waiting for the bubble gum to come in. I believe this was
during or right after the war. Apparently bubble gum was not high priority
and the supply was limited.
We then moved to a more suburban/rural area. Yes, we still had a
neighborhood type store, bigger now and a real grocery store. However, we
could walk there and get emergency items and treats, etc. Our next door
neighbor had a few cows and we bought gallons of milk from him. Now, this
strikes me as being a bit dangerous, but we all survived without
pasteurization somehow. I remember walking over there with a glass gallon
jar and getting the milk. I think it was either 25 cents or 50cents. I
know I had quarters, but am a bit fuzzy on the price. I was probably
concentrating on not tripping with that glass jar :+) I don't believe we
ever bought milk at the store. My folks used to use evaporated milk for
their coffee. Anyone else remember that? Or were my folks the only ones.
We also had a Bambi man who delivered baked goods to the neighborhood. Mary
