RE the ATMS.....
Others have said this and I wanted to confirm, *the* best exchange rate I
received on my recent trips abroad were achieved in this method.
My own U.S. bank suggested to me (when I checked about obtaining some
foreign currency before leaving home) that I use my credit card wherever
possible, and my ATM card for any cash as needed.
My later bank and credit card statements confirmed I received exchange
rates which were essentially the current bank rate, which most of you
probably already discovered is a good deal lower than the actual over the
counter rate, *even* if you exchange at American Express or banks as
opposed to the more expensive commercial currency exchange enterprises.
I found it was one of the *few* times my husband actually *asked*...."Got
your credit card, honey?"<BIG GRIN>
(Usually, he seems to hope I left it at home! Can't imagine why...ha!!)
I found ATMs were everywhere, even in the smallest of Cornish towns. The
ones I used were all attached to banks, however. I'm not sure if England
and the continent have those indpendently -owned commercial ATMs like we
now have in the states, I don't recall noticing them. Anyway, those often
attached pretty exhorbitant usage fees.....so I'd steer clear of those.
Have a *great* trip!
