Many thanks to the many people (too many to mention) who sent me information
about "V.A.D.".

For those who don't know it VADs were members of the 'Voluntary Aid
Detachment', who served in both world wars, mostly as auxilliary nurses. They
still have a place in the Remembrance Day parade at the Cenotaph in Whitehall
each year and are very highly regarded by servicemen and families familiar
with their work.
