Hi again
This is sort-of gen. I expect you're all getting pretty fed up of hearing
about my photograph, but amongst all the welcome comments I've received
(thank you) are also some about the size of the scanned image.
I reduced the image to 100dpi and saved it as a .jpg file to put onto the
webpage for folks to look at (and download quickly), and mentioned that my
original image was over 70Mb. This latter bit was not a complaint, I just
mentioned it in passing.
I scanned it at 1200 dpi, and printed copies at 1440 dpi, which is the
maximum my Epson Stylus will do. I saved it in it's native Paintshop Pro
format (the program in which I edited it). I am not short of resources
(256Mb RAM and 30Gb disk space) but I did it like this so that, bearing in
mind the pitiful state the original photograph is in, I would have the
finest possible image to reproduce for me and the picture's owner.
I worked like this on the principle that I can always take away detail from
the image, but cannot put back what I didn't scan in the first place, once I
have sent the original back.
Do you think I am working along the right lines, or am I being
extravagant/wasteful/selfish with my disk space? I'd be interested to hear
your opinions on this, being a relative beginner at preserving old pictures.
Stella
PS. I just mentioned this in passing to my partner, and he said he'd be
grateful if I'd leave a few kilobytes of disk space for some of his stuff!
<g> But who wants to store his Unreal files anyway!
