Subject: [NTT] Needlemakers - Lookup in Notts Archives
Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2000 14:28:13 +1030

Hello to all those kind people living close to the Notts Archives, and
fortunate enough to visit it from time to time.....[crawl, crawl, grovel,
grovel - in between the sobbing].

Would SKS please have a look in the index of apprentices or
indentures at the Notts Archives, which has from time to time been
noted in this list, for:

Henry McQUIN, bpt 17 Sept 1813, Mansfield. Father: Charles
McQUIN(McQUEEN)from County BAN, Private, 2nd Battalion 72nd
Highland Regt of Foot. Mother: Elizabeth McQUIN(Macquin), nee
BOOTH. Elizabeth might appear, if named in such a document,
with her 2nd married name, FEATHERSTONE.

Henry McQUIN, based on Directory entries, Census occupations
and post 1837 birth certificates, etc, was a Needle Maker from at
least the mid 1830s until circa 1861.

He married at Sutton in Ashfield in 1835 (this seems to have been
the home parish of his wife's family - BETTS), and thereafter
appears to have largely resided at Mansfield. However, it is not
known where he lived between his birth and marriage.

As noted in a previous posting, Henry's father returned to his
Battalion, then in IRL, a few month after the wedding and it is
unlikely that he ever returned to England (but might have returned
home to SCT). Henry's mother also remarried in 1820 at
Nottingham St Marys to Samuel FEATHERSTONE and then
disappeared. So Henry may well have been fostered and
apprenticed from an early age, or spent some time in the
Workhouse.

I will naturally reimburse any costs associated with obtaining
copies of documents in the happy event (Please!!) that some exist.

Should any other detail be needed to help identify my Henry please
advise. I have quite a bit on him post 1835, but almost nothing
prior to that.

With thanks
