Thank you, Paul, for the explanation of "Spittal". There is a Spittal Hill in Sheffield. When I was a child I thought this meant that the folk who lived there indulged in a rather unpleasant habit! But, when one thinks about it, it's fairly obvious, isn't it? Ho -spital. Mind you, I still think my childhood explanation is more colourful!
