In the last several days I have posted messages looking for information
about a Mary SMITH.
What I am looking for is the Mary SMITH that married William RING in
Sambro, Nova Scotia in 1821. Mary and William had a son, William, in 1822
(baptized in early 1823) and a daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1823. Elizabeth
was baptized in August 1825 at the Brunswick Street Church Halifax and my
great-great-grandfather Richard COOK was baptized the same day at the same
church as Elizabeth. Richard's baptism refers to Elizabeth's baptism
implying that Elizabeth and Richard had the same mother. Richard's baptism
states that Richard was the son of "the late Joseph COOK of Yarmouth and
Mary now RING". The interesting thing is that William RING and Mary are
each listed as head of household in the 31 December 1827 Sambro census and
Mary is listed as Mary SMITH. This raises the question: Was Mary married
before she married William RING in 1821 and something happened to the
marriage(s) and she returned to using her maiden name? This is why I am
looking for a Mary SMITH in the Shelburn-Barrington-Yarmouth-Digby area
that may have some connections with the Halifax-Sambro area -- especially
since there were at least a half-dozen SMITHs in Sambro in the December
1827 Sambro census. I suspect that Mary may have been born about 1790
(making her 20 years old in 1810 when Richard was born) or maybe a little
before. I should mention that the William RING mentioned above was the only
RING in the 1827 census for Sambro and there were only 36 families listed
for Sambro in that census.
Based on the above does anyone have any ideas who the Mary SMITH mentioned
above could be?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
TIA
