Just so we all understand, "Austria" at this point in time is
"Austria-Hungary"
My grandmother's family came from Austria-Hungary, but it was the part
currently in Slovakia. Austria-Hungary was a *huge* political entity at
that time. Today we think of Austria as a separate nation, but prior to
WW I it meant something totally different from what it does today.
In addition, the extent of Hungary's lands are different today. We can
speak of the "Lands of the Hungarian Crown", and these extend over
quite an area. My great-grandmother Novak I am told spoke both
Slovak and Hungarian -- she came from a region now in Slovakia,
but then part of the Hungary that made up part of Austria-Hungary.
Novak is a primarily Slav name, not Hungarian.
