Hi Jackie,

Do you have any information on where I could find a copy of the St.
Gregory's Parish Census of 1908? I have many relatives who are/were members
of that Parish.

Does anyone out there have information on
John Downey and Celina Noonan Downey? They show up on the 1901 census
records in Amherst as being from New Brunswick, no date of birth for either
of them, but lists one son age 13 who is french speaking like the parents,
but the other children listed only speak english. See below:
John Downey age about 30 born New Brunswick - Farm Hand - FRENCH (mother
tongue)
Helena Downey age about 30 born New Brunswick - Wife - French (mother
tongue)
Charles Downey age 13 born New Brunswick - son = French (mother tongue)
Helena Downey age 9 - born Nova Scotia - daughter - ENGLISH - does not speak
french
Leina Downey age 5 - born Nova Scotia - daughter
Joseph Downey age 6 born Nova Scotia - son
James Downey born April 1/1887 Nova Scotia - son Twin
John Downey born April 1/1887 Nova Scotia - son Twin
William Downey born May 1900 - son Nova Scotia

John and Helena Downey and the family are later shown in the 1908 parish
census taken tt St Gregory Catholic Parish church in Donkin, Cape Breton.

My grandmother was Helena (Lena) Downey the child shown on the 1901 census
and named after her mother as age 9 on this census. She married Alexander
Gardiner and they are also listed in 1908 church census taken at St. Gregory
Parish.
Parents of Alexander Gardiner (who was born Nov 7, 1877) were Annie
MacKinnon and James Gardiner.
