DECEDENT: Joseph Richard MacPhee SURNAMES: BURNS, DUBINSKY, LAWRIE, MACPHEE,
NOONIE, OSBORNE, POLLETT, RACKI Published on Tuesday, February 5, 2002

Submitted by Betty Reeves

Joseph Richard MacPhee of Catherine Street, Sydney, passed away suddenly
Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, in his home. Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late
Ambrose and Muriel (Noonie) MacPhee. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor
(Pollett) MacPhee; two daughters, Dianne MacPhee (Phillip Dubinsky) and Joanne (Glen)
Burns, all of Sydney; three sisters, Helen (John) Racki, New Waterford, Martha
(Dave) Osborne, Sydney, and Doris Lawrie, Brantford, Ont.; one brother,
Richard (Priscilla) MacPhee, Sydney; and many nieces and nephews. Joe was
predeceased by his sister, Nancy in infancy. He was an active member of Holy Redeemer
Parish. Joe was a very multi-talented and hardworking man. He was employed at
the Coke Ovens until early retirement. He was a real “Mr. Fix-It”, who was
always willing to do a plumbing/electrical job or any other type of household
task when needed. Joe had many interests and passions throughout his life. He
initially began Holy Redeemer Loaves and Fishes 11 years ago and dedicated his
time and energy until the present. He was never too busy to help anyone in need
including family, friends and strangers alike and never expected anything in
return. Joe played guitar in both folk and children’s choirs in the Sydney
area. He was an avid ice skater and loved the game of baseball, which he played
for many years. Recently, Joe developed a keen interest in bird watching. He
received much pleasure from feeding and distinguishing between different species
as they came to feed from the birdhouses he built in his yard. This goes hand
in hand with his deep love for animals, especially his “little buddy” Tam,
who he walked religiously every evening. Over the last few summers, he enjoyed
spending time with his family at the cottage in Mira. Joe will be deeply and
sadly missed by his many friends and family. Visitation will be held at Sydney
Memorial Chapel Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Holy
Redeemer Church, Friday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Erroll MacDonald officiating.
Interment in Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be
made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Holy Redeemer Loaves and Fishes in
Whitney Pier. Condolences may be sent to the family at
