Blaise MacDonald dies suddenly

BY TANYA COLLIER MACDONALD CAPE BRETON POST SYDNEY

A high-profile Cape Breton lawyer known to be a respected rival in the
courtroom and a true friend of the labour movement, died suddenly in a
Halifax hotel room, Monday. Blaise MacDonald, 62, was described by saddened
colleagues as an advocate for the underdog with successes driven by his
deep desire for fairness and justice. Regional Crown Attorney Ken Haley
first witnessed MacDonald's competitive spirit while the two were
classmates attending Dalhousie Law School in the 70s. "He was a strong
presence in the classroom," said Haley. "He always expressed his point of
view. Whenever he spoke on a topic, you couldn't help but notice him." When
MacDonald graduated, his colleagues knew to be well prepared when they
sparred with him in the courtroom. He defended his clients enthusiastically
leaving "no stone unturned." "As a consequence, he made us all better
lawyers," said Haley. Victor Tomiczek, Canadian Auto Workers national
representative, said the island has lost a great labour lawyer. "He always
knew how to get the job done."Tomiczek said he considered MacDonald to be a
mentor who was always willing to give advice and guidance. "I'm going to
miss him."
Called to the bar in 1977, MacDonald had an enviable career that includes
high-profile cases like the Westray Public Inquiry and the Bailey Inquiry.
MacDonald is survived by his wife Louise and son Sean.
