Cape Breton Deaths June 13, 2006 Tuesday

Irvin E. Brooks 73, NORTH SYDNEY It is with deep sadness that we announce
the passing of Irvin E. Brooks, age 73, on Sunday, June 11, 2006, at his
home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Weymouth, N.S., he was the
loving son of the late William and Mabel (Dale) Brooks. Irvin worked as a
lineman for Eastern Light and Power and then with Nova Scotia Power for 33
years until his retirement in 1991. He was a Master Mason with the Royal
Albert Masonic Lodge No. 19. Dad was a kind and gentle man who enjoyed
bowling, travelling and swimming with our mom and all their friends at the
Northside Pool. He especially enjoyed a good game of cribbage with his
cribbage partner and longtime friend Ralph Strickland, and they would
travel anywhere in Cape Breton to enjoythe people and the game. He will be
deeply missed by his loving wife and life companion of 49 years, Joan
(Fitzgerald) Brooks; his three sons, Gary, at home, Ward (Maxine),
Ingonish, Jason (Lisa), Guelph; daughter, Lynn (Ronnie) Ivey, Millville.He
was a loving 'Grampy' to his two princesses, Carly and Haley Ivey and his
two shiny pennies, Jason and Brandon Brooks. His grandchildren were his
true treasures in life. Irvin was a beloved brother to sisters, Gwen
Vibert,Weymouth, Joyce Ward, Argyle, N.Y., Marjorie Dixon, Australia, Eline
Brooks, Sydney; brother, Noel (Estelle), Bible Hill, N.S. He is also
survivedby his mother-in-law, Josephine Fitzgerald, Nfld.; and many dear
nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his dear
sister and her husband, Noreen and Jack Ward, N.Y. and brothers-in-law,
Kerr Vibert, Richard Ward and John Dixon. In honour of Irvin's wishes there
will be no visitation.Cremation has taken placeand a memorial service will
be held 2 p.m., Wednesday,June 14 at St. Matthew Wesley United Church,
North Sydney with Rev. David Luker officiating. Funeral arrangements are
entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.

Bruce MacFarlane GLACE BAY It is with great sadness we announce the
passing of Bruce MacFarlane, June 12, 2006, at the Glace Bay Healthcare
Complex.
Born in Glace Bay, Bruce was the son of the late Doug and Helen (Gouthro)
MacFarlane. He is survived by many nieces and nephews; special
grandnephews, Paul and Michael Breski and grandnieces, Kate and Laura
MacMullin. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Bea
Thrasher and his brothers, Charles and Matt. Bruce was retired and was a
member of St. John the Baptist Church. Visitation will be held Wednesday,
June 14 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace
Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated
Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Churchwith Rev. John J. MacIntyre
officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery, Glace Bay.

George William Bussey 46, LOUISBOURG We regret to announce the sudden
passing of George Bussey, June 10, 2006. Born in Sydney, he was the son of
Esther (Coley) Bussey and the late Gilber t Roy Bussey. Working in the
fishing industry most of his life, he was employed with A&L Seafood Ltd.,
Louisbourg. He loved to dance and spend time with his friends. Besides his
mother, George is survived by his daughters, Ashley and Kayla; son, Roy;
sisters, Evelyn (Kevin) Donovan, Minnie (Brian) MacLeod; brother, Steward
(Florence) Young, as well as several nieces and nephews. He is also
survived by longtime friend and companion, Jean and son, Liam. He was
predeceased by his father, Gilbert Roy and both maternal and paternal
grandparents. Cremation has taken place. A service of remembrance will be
held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at St. Bartholomew's Church, Main
Street, Louisbourg, with Rev. Valerie Rhymes officiating. Reception to

Chad Preston Francis 22, WAGMATCOOK Chad Preston Francis, 22, of 59 Humes
Rear Rd./East Loop, Wagmatcook First Nation, died June 10, 2006. Chad was
born at Victoria County Memorial Hospital, July 4, 1983. He was the son of
Theresa (Terry) Francis and Kevin Stevens. He was a member of Queen of the
World parish, Wagmatcook. Chad was a bartender and conference porter at the
Inverary Inn Resort, Baddeck. With his Grade 12 diploma, he obtained
numerous certificates
in the field of tourism and hospitality. Because of his sincere kindness,
Chad was a super host, true friend for many, excellent team player and
devoted
community member. He is survived by mother, Theresa (Terry) Francis; father,
Kevin Stevens; grandmother, Georgette Francis; grandfather, Keptin Ronald
Stevens Sr.; one sister; three brothers; nine aunts; six uncles; several
cousins; godparents and two godchildren. Chad will be sadly missed and
greatly loved by family and friends. He was predeceased by his grandfather,
Henry Francis Sr., grandmother, Jane Julia Stevens, uncles, Keith Stevens,
Douglas Stevens, Gerald Stevens and aunt, Deborah Stevens. Chad's remains
will be resting at 59 Humes Rear Rd./EastLoop, residence of his
grandmother, Georgette Francis, who he had resided with. Visitation hours
starting at 5 p.m. Thursday,
June 15. The funeral mass service will be held at 11 a.m., June 17 at Queen
of the World Church,Wagmatcook, with Rev. Paul McGillvray officiating.
Burial will be in Queen of the World Cemetery. Following the services,
there will be a community feast and auction at Wagmatcook Cultural Centre.

Kathleen MacDonald TRURO Kathleen Ethel MacDonald passed away peacefully
June 11, 2006, at home in Truro,N.S. Born in Glace Bay, March 3, 1914, she
was the daughter of the late Herbert and Ethel (Cribb) Hillier. Kay
graduated as a registered nurse from St. Joseph's Hospital in 1936. Kay was
married to Alexander Joseph (A.J.) MacDonald in 1940. While A.J. was in the
RCAF, they lived in several locations across Canada but returnedhome to
Nova Scotia in 1967. For many years they lived in Truroand wintered in
Dunedin, Fla. Throughout her life, Kay was a devoted wife, a cherished
sister, 'the' best mother and grandmother, a competent, caring nurse and a
special friend to many. Loving and witty until the very end, Kathleen had a
unique and special relationship with everyone she met. Kay had many
interests and hobbies,including knitting, quilting, playing bridge and
tarabish and doing the New York Times crossword puzzles with a pen. Kay was
predeceased by her husband in 2001 and was the last
surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by her children,
Alasdair (Jean), Three Fathom Harbour, Wallace (Helen), Summerside, P.E.I.,
Sandra (Greg Langille), Upper Lawrencetown, Allan (Vera), Troy, Cape
Breton; and her grandchildren, Andrew, Kathleen, Alexis, Matthew, Morgan
and Gavin. Special thanks to the nurses of the VON, Dr. Berghius and the
palliative care workers.
No visitation. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 14 at 9:30
a.m. at the Immaculate Conce ption Church, 669 Prince St., Truro. Donations
in her memory may be made to a charity of choice. Interment will follow in
Robie Street Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Colchester Community
Funeral Home.

Andrew Neary 1916-2006 GLACE BAY It is with great sadness we announce the
passing of Andrew Neary, 89, of Douglas Avenue, Glace Bay. Andrew passed
away Sunday, June 11, 2006, at the Glace Bay Health Care Complex. Born in
Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Patrick and Mary (Robertson) Neary.
Andrew was employed with Devco retiring from No. 20 Colliery, New Aberdeen,
after several years of service. He was a veteran of the Canadian Armed
Forces serving in the Second World War. Andrew also was employed with the
Glace Bay postal services for 19 years in the janitorial department. Andrew
married Margaret Jane Cole in 1942 and they lived in Glace Bay raising
seven children. Throughout his life, he fulfilled many roles - a
lovinghusband, a devoted father to his children and dedicated grand and
great-grandfather to his grandchildren. He was an avid horseshoe player.
All who visited with him loved his amazing smile and sense of humour. He
will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Margaret Jane (Cole); children,
Kay Jeffrey (John), London, Ont., Helen Strong (Bruce), Glace Bay,
Andrew (Mary Anne), Port Hope, Ont., Raymond (Marie), Patrick (Karen),
Diane Neary (Ross), John (Cathy), all of Glace Bay; sisters, Veronica
Stonier (James), Kay Howie (Edgar); brothers, Peter Neary (Theresa),
Allister Neary (Elsie), Glace Bay. Besides his parents, he was predeceased
by two children in infancy, sister, Bridget LeBlanc, Sydney, Irene MacNeil,
Glace Bay, Margaret O'Reagan, Glace Bay, Frances Hall, Port Morien,
brothers, Alexander, John, Timothy, Glace Bay, Patrick Neary, Ontario. Also
surviving are 18 cherished grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and one
great great-grandson. There will no visitation for Mr. Neary, as cremation
will take place. A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 15, at 2
p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.
Fr. John Graham will be officiating. Interment will be in St.
Anne's Cemetery. Donations in Andrew's memory may be made to the Cape

Bill White LONDON, ONT. Bill White, 56, formerly of Victoria Mines, died
suddenly Monday, June 29, 2006, in Springville, N.Y. He was the devoted
husband for 36 years of Yvonne (Schaump), formerly of South Bar. Loving
father of David (Janet) and Michael (Anne). Cherished papa to Mitchell,
Renee, Mikaela and MacKenzie. Dear brother of Blaise(Johanna), Francis
(Kathy), Alicia (Dave) Hillman, Kevin (Rose), Gary (Sandy) and Jo-Ann
(Kevin) Burke. The family received friends at Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel,
London, Ont., for visitation Wednesday, June 7. Cremation followed. A
memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Alphonsus Church, Low

Ivan Boone 79, SYDNEY Ivan Boone, 79, of Ashby Road, Sydney, passed away
Friday, June 9, 2006, at home. Born in Birch Grove, he was the son of the
late Heber and Irene (Shepard) Boone. Ivan owned and operated his own
transmission shop. In
his earlier years, he was a professional stock car racer in the United
States and Ontario. Most of his spare time was spent watching harness
racing and fishing. He enjoyed spending summers in Brockville, Ont., with
family. Ivan is survived by his children, Danny, Donna, Janice and Vikki,
all of Ontario, Joanne, Las Vegas, and April, with whom he resided;
sisters, Lorna Purdie, Markham, Ont., and Lois (Wilson) MacLeod, Dartmouth;
sistersin-law, Barbara Boone, Birch Grove, and Shirley Boone, Dartmouth.
Grampa will be missed by all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren,
especially Hayleigh, whom he adored. He also leaves to mourn close friends,
Melissa, Porky and Larry. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by
brothers, Gerald, Vernon and Eldon, sister, Dorothy. There will be no
visitationor funeral service as per request. A private interment will take
place at a later date. Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Paul Kenneth Shewan 42, SYDNEY We regret to announce the sudden passing of
Paul Shewan. Born in Manitoba, he moved to Sydney 10 years ago to raise his
family. Left behind to mourn are his wife, June (Chisholme) Shewan and the
love of his life, his daughter, Shavaun.If my parting has left a void, then
fill it with remembered joys.

Thomas 'James' LeBlanc LAC LA BICHE Thomas 'James' LeBlanc of Lac La Biche,
Alta. and formerly of Florence and Alder Point,N.S., who died June 9, 2006,
is also survived by his grandmother, Ellen Regis (Jessome) Whryn.

Thelma G. Mollon 81, SYDNEY Thelma G. Mollon, 81, of Sydney passed away
Monday, June 12, 2006, at the Cove Guest Home.Born in New Waterford, Oct.
17, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Perry J. and Mabel (Kendrick)
Barns. In 1973, Thelma earned her bachelor of arts in history from
Dalhousie University at the age of 49. While living in Halifax from
1955-86, she was a member of the Toast Mistress Club. Thelma was an active
member in the anti-war movement and a former member of the Professional
Engineers Wives Association.Thelma is survived by her husband, Reginald
Mollon; son, Stephen, Toronto; daughter, Ann Mollon, Ottawa; brother,
Philip Burns, New Waterford; sister, Elaine MacMullin, New Waterford;
grandchildren, Daniel and Sabrina Chichagov. She was predeceased by
brothers, Gerald, Kenny and Harvey. There will be no visitation. A
graveside service will be held at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Thursday,
June 15 at 2 p.m.,with Rev. Ralph Johnston officiating. Memorial donations

Melvin David Devoe 59, FLORENCE It is with deep sadness that we announce
the death of Melvin Devoe of 56 Shore Rd., Florence. Melvin passed away on
June 12,
2006, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by all his
loving family. Born in Florence, he was the son of the late Elmer and Mary
(Jobes) Devoe and the stepson of Pearl Devoe. He was a member of St.
Stephen's parish, Florence. In earlier years, Melvin worked in construction
and on the Great Lakes, until poor health forced him to retire. Melvin
enjoyed woodworking and was an avid gardener. Besides his stepmother,
Pearl, he is survived by his fiancée, Shirley; brother, John-Elmer
'Brother' Devoe (Maureen), Millville; sisters, Mary Penny (Mae), Sydney
Mines, Rosalie Bragg, Irene (Robert) Bradley, both of Florence, and Rogene
(Glen) McGean, Groves Point. Melvin is also survived by a number of aunts,
uncles, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Melvin was predeceased by
his sisters, Winnifred and Brenda MacLellan. There will be no visitation as
requested by Melvin. Cremation has taken place. The funeral mass will be
celebrated Thursday, June 15, 2006, at 2 p.m. in St. Stephen's Church,
Florence with Fr. A.D. Campbell officiating. Burial in parish cemetery.
Donations in memory of Melvin may be made to the renal dialysis unit at the
Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. Funeral arrangements have
been entrusted to J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines.
