Cape Breton Deaths June 26, 2006 Monday
JOSEPH CARMEN "CARMIE' GILLIS, 72 Boisdale, Joseph Carmen "Carmie" Gillis,
a longtime resident of Boisdale, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 23,
2006, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. Born in North
Sydney, Carmie was the son of the late Joseph and Lucy (MacNeil) Gillis.
Carmie is survived by brother Ambrose of Halifax and sisters Sr. Margaret,
CSM, of Lethbridge, Jenny (Ches) Liska of Northwest Arm, Sophie (John)
Gaskis of Calgary. He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews,
grand nieces and grand nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by
brother Bert, sister Mary MacSween and infant twin brothers, Michael and
Archibald. Carmie retired from the Canadian National Railway after many
years of dedicated service. Carmie was actively involved with the
Orangedale Station Association where he had many close friends. As a
life-long railroad worker, he thoughly enjoyed supporting the activities of
the association. Carmie was a very generous man and supported many
charities over the years. He was a faithful member of St. Andrew's Parish
in Boisdale, where he acted as acolyte on many occasions, especially at
parish funerals. Carmie was special to all who knew him and will be sadly
missed. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation
for the late Carmie Gillis is scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, 2006 from 2-4
& 7 -9 pm in St. Andrew's Church in Boisdale. Liturgy of Christian Burial
will be celebratead on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 in St. Andrew's Church at
11 am with Rev. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery.

DANIEL 'D.J.' PETRIE CAMERON, 18 Kitchener, Ontario - It is with deep
sorrow and broken heats we announce the sudden passing of D.J. on Friday,
June 23, 2006 at the age of 18 years. Loving son of Donna Cameron and Jim
Petrie. Dear brother of Karla and her husband Mark Currier, Lisa Cameron,
all of Kitchener, Robert Petrie of Brampton and Lisa Petrie and her husband
Leon of Alberta. Dear uncle to Malex, Carater, Logan, Emily, Justin and
Travis. Near nephew to Michael (Louise), Delina, Rose (Barry), Gwen (Tom)
of Kitchener. D.J. was born in Cape Breton and is survived by his
grandmother, Chrissy Cameron, his aunts Valerie (Stan), Colleen and Allana
and uncles, Jimmy and Malcholm (Chris), who still reside there. D.J. had a
big heart for people less fortunate than he was and will be sadly missed by
all who knew him. We will always remember his friendly smile. D.J.'s
family will receive relatives and friends from 7-9 pm on Monday and 11:30
am-12:45 pm on Tuesday at teh Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick
Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. Funeral service will be at 1 pm on
Tuesday, June 27, 2006 in the chapel of the funeral Home. Cremation to
follow, with burial in New Waterford at a later date. In lieu of flowers,
donations to the Canadian Mental Health Association would be appreciatead
by the family (cards available at the funeral home). Always a smile,
instead of a frown, always a hand, when one was down, always true,

ANGUS JOSEPH 'ANGIE' MACDONALD, 57 NewVictoria - It is with great sadness
and despair that we regret to announce the sudden passing of Angus Joseph
MacDonald on Thursday June 23, 2006 at the New Waterford Consolidated
Hospital. Born and raised in New Waterford, he was the son of the late
Angus "Judique" and Elizabeth Francis "Nina" (MacMullin) MacDonald. Angie
attended Mount Carmel School and was a member of St. Joseph's Church in New
Victoria, where he took residence with his wife Laurie 37 years ago. Angie
worked in No. 12 Lingan and Phalen collieries for a total of 30 years as a
mill-wright, until his retirement in 1997. Angie enjoyed a good laugh,
joke and good conversation with whomever he came in contact with. He had a
free and loving nature who saw good in everyone. Since his retirement, he
enjoyed doing his yard work and keeping his home up to par and if he wasn't
in the yard, he could be found in his favorite chair watching television.
Angie leaves to mourn, the love of his life, Laurie (Curchell) and his
devoted children, Michael (Carol) MacDonald of Scotchtown, and Kelly
(Glenn) Doucette of New Victoria, his beloved grandchildren, the light of
his life, Michael and Morgan MacDonald and Renee and Parker Doucette, one
brother John "Nipper" MacDonald (special friend Betty), sisters Mary
MacKenzie, Margie (Frank) Bota, Kitty (Billy) Doucette, all of New
Waterford, and Betty Timmons of Woodstock, Ontario, and special
brother-in-law Dave Lavender of Oromocto, NB, as well as many nieces and
nephews and many friends. Besdes his parents, he was predeceased also by
brother William "Sonny" MacDonald, sisters Francis Tait and Rachel
Lavender, brothers-in-law Wilfred MacKenzie and Garfield Timmons, Ralph and
George Burchell, sisters-in-law "Bugsy" and Eileen MacDonald, father and
mother-in-law Jiggs and Sister Burchell. There will be no visitation as
per Angie's request. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to McLellan
Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave, in New Waterford, 862-7500. A
funeral mass will be held on Tuesday June 27, 2006 at 11 am in St. Joseph's
Church, New Victoria. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. A
reception will follow in the church basement. In lieu of flowers,

PEARL CHRISTINE STEWART, 72 Stewiacke - Pearl Christine (Campbell) Stewart
- 75, Stewiacke, passed away at home Friday, June 23, 2006. Born in Glace
Bay, she was a daughter of the late Angus "Gussie" and Margaret (Buchanan)
Campbell. She was the wife of the late Dr. Robert Colin David Stewart. In
1953, Pearl was the first blind graduate of the Nova Scotia Normal College.
She then went on to teach at the Halifax School for the Blind until 1967.
From 1970-1972, Pearl attended Central Connecticut State College where she
was the first blind graduate, earning a Bachelor of Education degree. Upon
her return to Nova Scotia, she became the head of both the English and Math
Departments at the Halifax School for the Blind. She left the profession to
make her home in Stewiacke where she was wife to Colin and mother to Rhona.
Pearl continued her love of teaching by volunteering at local schools. She
played an active role in her husband's political career. Surviving are
daughter, Rhona Duplessis (Blair) of Lower Sackville; stepsons, Roderick
(Carol) of Bedford; Douglas (Isabella) of France; sister, Mae Ferguson
(John) of Connecticut; nieces and nephews, Norma Silverstein (Robert),
Robert Ferguson (Sheri), Al Ferguson (Vicky), Margaret Ruta (Tom), Mary-Lu
Nelson (Jack), Glen Ferguson (Beth); many grandnieces and nephews,
great-grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brother in childhood,
Archie; sister in childhood, Christine. Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8
p.m. Tuesday, June 27, in Ettinger Funeral Home, 2812 Main St.,
Shubenacadie. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, in
St. James Presbyterian Church, 725 Prince St., Truro, Rev. Gillis Smith
officiating. Interment to follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Stewiacke East.

JAMES HAYES, 84 Sydney - James Hayes, 84, of the Cove Guest Home and before
that Glace Bay, died on Saturday after a long struggle with conestive heart
failure, Parkinson's and latealy, bouts of pneumonia. Jim was born in
Glace Bay where he started a career in newspapers as a reporter on the
Glace Bay Gazette. He also worked as a reporter and editor at the Halifax
Herald, Winnipeg Tribune, Cape Breton Post and Ottawa Citizen. Following
his reitrement, he did freelance work for the CBC in Charlottetown. He is
survived by his children, Jim (Irene), Victor (Kathy), Diane (Chris), Chris
(Marlene), Sheilah, Cora (Doug) and Kathleen. An affectionate grandfather,
his is also survived by grandchildren, Jason, Tom, Evely, Bobbie, Chris,
Sonja, Josh, Robert, RIchard, Alex, Maria, Rebecca and Laura. Bertha
(Bobbe), his wife, who was also from Glace Bay, died in 1995. There were
married for 50 years. He was also predeceased by his parents, James and
Miriam, brothers Howard, Charles, and Clayton and sisters Mabel and Nan.
He will be buried in Black Brook Cemetery next to Bobbe's grave after a
family ceremony.
AUGUSTUS 'GUSSIE' MCAULAY, 69 GlaceBay - Augustus "Gussie" McAulay, 69, of
Dinn Avenue in Glace Bay on Friday June 23, 2006. Born in Glace Bay, he
was the son of the late John and Mary (Allison) McAulay. Gussie was a
member of Holy Cross Church in Glace Bay, and a former employee with the
Cape Bareton Developement Corp, for many years, until his retirement. He
will always be remembered as a car enthusiast, who enjoyed chatting with
neighbourhood friends. He took great pride and joy in visiting with his
grandchildren, but remembered always. Mr. McAulay is survivied by his
wife, the former Anna Winstanley, a daughter Brenda (Ron) MacTavish of PEI,
sons William (Susan), Wayne (Wilma) and Johnny, all of Glace Bhay, and
Jerry (Robyn) of PEI,. a brother Jackie and a sister Olive MacNeil, both of
Glace Bay, 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Besides his
parents, Gussie was predeceased by two sisters, Shirley Prennie and Muriel
(Muddie) MacDonald. Visitation for Mr. McAulay will be in V.J. McGillvray
Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street in Glace Bay on Tuesday June 27, 2006 from
2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral mass will be celebrated in Holy Cross Church on
Wednesday June 28th at 10 am, with Fr. John Graham officiating. Cremation
will take place and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Memorial
donations in Gussie's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
