In the fascinating batch of materials I received today from Tony Foster in
Lancashire, England, there's a copy of a page from "Fasti Oxonienses", about
graduates of English universities. And that, of course, includes John Hewit
of Cambridge, great grandfather of John Huett Nutter of colonial Maryland.
It describes how he received his Doctor of Divinity on October 17, 1643, and
how he "suffer'd death by the axe on Tower-hill 8 June 1658 for conspiring
against the then power and authority" (i.e., Olver Comwell's Protectorate).
Well, the footnote to that gets awfully interesting.
It says:
"The rings given to friends upon occasion of the death of Dr. Hewit, had this
motto.
'Herod necuit Johannem'
as appears by a legacy of such a ring left by bishop Wild in his last will
and testament'.
'Herod necuit Johannem', according to my wife, who had Latin, means
'Herod killed John'.
Just in case there's ever a Nutter Trivia game.
They certainly had a flair, didn't they?
Dave
