From: Jan Alpert's Nutter Newsletter of January, 1987:
Her cited source: Los Angeles Public Library, Genealogy Room, 1985 from data
prepared by Alonzo Culley Winans in 1950.
"The Nutter family is of English descent, and in the Pendle district,
Lancashire, England, there have been Nutters since about 1350, there being an
Ellis Nutter shown in the register of New Church, Pendle, in that year. The
given name of 'Ellis' is very prominent in the Nutter family."
"The English records of the University of Oxford, show a WIlliam Nutter of
York enrolled there in 1611, and a George Nutterof the County of Lancashire
there about the same time."
"About 1633 Hatevil Nutter, (Puritan) born in England in 1603, came with his
family to Dover, New Hampshire. "
"In the Virginia region, one Eli Nutter, is said to be the emigrant
forefather and founder of the family and was in Jamestown, Virginia, the
first English settlement in America. No direct records can be found of his
descendants, but reference is made to "History of West Virginia," by Dondit &
Maxwell, pages 216 and 332, Vol. 2, which states the Eli Nutter, of West
Union, West Virginia, descended directly from Eli Nutter, the Jamestown
emigrant. It also says that Captain Thomas Nutter who in 1772 built
Nutter's Fort, near Clarksburg, West Virginia, was the great grandson of the
"emigrant" Eli Nutter of Jamestown."
"English records show that Reverend Ellis Nutter was the Master of Burnley
School, Lancashire County, England for over 33 years. This is near ...the
region of New Church, Pendle, Lancashire County, England. In that vicinity
is also Greenhead Farm House, erected by the Nutters about 1600"
"It is understood that the Nutters in England were prominet in the Pendle
region near Whalley Abbey, Lancashire, England."
Jan added the following note to her newsletter on Alonzo Winans: His line is
