Hi Debbie,
You can order copies of Alexander HADLER's Military records and Pension
records from NARA/National Archives.
There is a separate form for Military and for Pension records.
Cost is about $17 for Pension or Military and you can order online using
a Credit or Cash card.
Takes about a month.
Here is the website to order Military or Pension records

If you are looking for what he did in the CW, his Military
records would probably tell you more.
The Ancestry record you quoted says he was a PVT/Private in the
INF/Infantry, so he was a foot soldier.

It sounds like he may have died in a Veterans Hospital by the
"last known address" of VA Medical Center, Bath, NY.
At most libraries you could look in the index of one of
those large CW history books to see what battles
the 187th, Company E, New York Infantry fought in.
I tracked my Great Grandfather's 106th NY battles
that way.
Not sure if you can do this online--someone else on
the list may know more.
Good Luck,
Diana Chapman Owen
(Gr Grand father - Julius Chapman, 106th NY)
