Thanks Ted for your quick response to my post. Your answer confirmed what I
thought since I'd not found any connection between the 37th Regiment and
Fort Sumter. Also the only military records I've found for my great
grandfather have him only serving in the Union army as far south as
Virginia. I think perhaps he might have been telling a tall tale about his
being at Fort Sumter to impress his neighbors and that's how the story ended
up in his obituary. He probably figured since he was a Civil War veteran and
nobody would take the time to find out if he was at Fort Sumter (something
not easy to check out in those days),that he'd stretch the truth a bit.
