When I first worked on the U. S. Censuses for my county, I printed from
the microfilm and taped the sheets together for my typists. Those were
the days... :-)

In my tests of the state census, I scanned some of the original
documents and sent images to my transcriber, which worked pretty well.
At least some of the state censuses have been filmed, so if you could
borrow a copy you should be able to get an acceptable image from that.
The Schenectady County Public Library has a microfilm scanner for public
use... you were going to come over and say hi, weren't you Pat? :-)

As an aside, I would mention that film scanners have become much more
affordable; see for example

which shows the PrimeFilm line from Pacific Image Electronics. The 1800
series is quite inexpensive (although I'd go for the higher-quality
3650u). Search for PrimeFilm as one or two words on eBay if you want to
check them out. Our new county historian has one of the low-end units
and really likes it.
