Subject: Silkworth--West Troy

I've just finished transcribing an 1845 probate record, Ulster County for
Benjamin Silkworth, intestate. I also have some Silkworths that were first
seen in Washington County in IGI records. Those in Washington Co have been
very hard to trace and I haven't made much progress. The parents were
William and Betsey Morse Silkworth and they had 9 children--all with fairly
common names except for one son named Preserved, who it turns out, made my
first mini-connection between the 2 groups possible.
In transcribing the above Ulster Probate record, the last person asked to
show for the reading is Elizabeth Silkworth of West Troy. Benjamin had no
daughters named Elizabeth, though one was called Mary Elizabeth. The Morse
Silkworth IGI record had no son named Benjamin. However in the 1850 census
Preserved Silkworth in Pittstown--in business with brother William
Silkworth. In Williams' home is Elizabeth Silkworth, age 71 in 1850.
Betsey is a nickname for Elizabeth. In the Probate document, her name is
separate from the list of the others who were children/siblings. The
document doesn't state the relationship of each to the deceased, however,
but I'm feeling she is, in fact, Betsey Morse Silkowrth.
This surname is unusual enough to presume they are all related at some
point. This is still a mini-connection at this point and my last 'hit' (10
months
ago) was also worked through the transcription of a legal record. For
instance, in that one, there appears to be no record of a James Silkworth
marriage to Anne Alliger whose family was of Ulster. A few years later
they appear on a family land sale to a relative and later moved to Seneca
county.
A group from this line settled in Onondaga County where they can be found
pretty consistently into the early 20th century. A descendent of theirs is
doing occasional research but her main thrust is on her maiden name, and
Silkworth is only a female collateral line coming in to hers.
I need to get to the right site for places to find the Silkworth surname
between 1790 and 1850--I believe I have canvassed all the censuses except
1800 which shows a John in Rensselaer County--could never find any more
about him--by 1810 he was gone. I've worked VT and MA but maybe not
enough. If some of this strikes you, I would appreciate conversing with
you.
And--Thanks for listening. Jan
