This has nothing to do with this site. But something very strange is going
on this week. I received, out of the blue, some "gateway" messages from
people about the Swains, which is the main line I am researching. When I
replied, I received back a notice that that address was expired. Then I went
to the Swain message board, and suddenly I started getting alot of emails
from people interested in and claiming to be related to my Swain family and
wanting photos. AT first I was excited, but something about it didn't make
sense. I went onto the Swain mailing list to check the email address for
that and it didn't correspond to the email address from the people who were
sending me emails. Then I wrote to the administrator of the Swain mailing
list and got a rather bizarre letter back using crude language and blaming
it all on me- it really didn't even make any sense. I also just received a
notice that someone just subscribed me to a newsletter called
AncestryStuff.com, out of Arizona! It says it has something to do with their
books and is a newsletter. I already get an ancestry newsletter, and living
in Provo, Utah, I know they are located out here.
I am wondering if I am getting emails from legitimate people or people who
are trying to set up false pedigree charts and get me into scam, also. I
know this is a safe mailing list, and that is why I am sending this to you
all. I would like for you to read a copy of the email sent to me by the so
called administrator-

"I have been bitching for years about the ridiculous notion that subscribers
know or care if they are on a "list" or "board." Like you, they innocently
think they are reaching ALL potentially-interested ears when they write in
about a McGillicuddy or Jones."

"Some Lists do forward their postings to the Boards of the same surname or
locale, but not all. But, even then, you had better not press "reply" for
your response, or you will reach ONLY the List, NOT both groups! Instead,
you must go to Rootsweb's home page, then find the Board of that name, and
make sure it forwards to the List (SHEER IDIOCY)!"

"With some surnames or locales, there is ONLY a Board or a List, but why
Rootsweb still keeps both Lists and Boards for most categories baffles any
intelligent follower."

Can anyone tell me what on earth is going on. This is getting a bit scary to
me. Sue Maxwell
